We've done 30 locks so far! Thirty! We have 44 to go, because even though the Trent Severn Waterway lock numbers go to 45, there is no lock 29. We left Trenton Port Marina on another rainy, cool day. We weren't super excited to do the locks in the rain, but we wanted to get some miles behind us, so off the dock we went.
We had a smooth, quiet day of locking because not many people were on the move in the rain. Even though we'd only traveled just over six nautical miles, we decided to stop at Lock 6 since it's one of the only lock stations along the Trent that have power pedestals.
We pulled in, plugged in and had a cozy, rainy afternoon. We watched a family movie, baked, and cooked a roast in the oven. All perfect rainy day activities!

We had another smooth locking travel day, which is all you can ask for really. Locks have been known to cause divorces. There are t-shirts that we’ve seen people wearing that have “Sorry about what I said when we were locking” printed on the front. Gord and I have done everything we can to ensure a smooth process. We have three marine headsets to clearly communicate amongst the crew, we have two massive black fenders which, if you remember, we purchased from Facebook Marketplace in Marathon FL. We also have two huge orange anchor ball buoys which we have inflated and have ready to use as well.
The next morning, the rain had moved on, and so did we. As we left Lock 6, we encountered a tight little passage and on approach, I wasn’t sure that Holy Cow would fit without “sucking it in.” Gord was unfazed though, and sailed right on through.

We reached our destination of Lock 11/12. This lock is different than the others because it is two locks back to back. The first set of doors are massive. Once they close and the water fills to the next level, another set of doors open, and you move your boat directly into the next tank. It was a fun lift and thankfully went smoothly.
We pulled over at the top of Lock 11/12 to tie up on the mooring wall because the locks were running shorter hours through the week, and we are unable to make it to the next lock before closing. This was a great stop though. Ranney Falls has a suspension bridge over a gorge and that was a must see. There was also a Geocache or two, so that added to our purpose for the walk.
When we got to the bridge, the kids were a little spooked by the grated floor and the fact that you could see straight down to the rushing, swirling water below. Know who else was not excited to see themselves suspended in the air….Tahna and Brodie. The grating on the bridge was rough and may have hurt their paws as well, so Gord offered to stay back with the dogs while we crossed the bridge. Brodie was not happy about that and whined and whined to follow, so Gord let go of the leash. Brodie hunkered down, and with one excruciatingly brave step at a time, and some cheering from his family, he made it to the other side. We have a video, it's just too large to post. With Brodie across, Gord was a true gentleman and made sure Tahna was able to join us as well.

When we finished exploring the falls, we headed back to Holy Cow. A German family sailing a catamaran had joined us on the mooring wall. On this boat, our kids had seen a fairly rare sight on this journey. An actual child to play with, and a boy even! The kids played like they were old friends reunited until it was time to hit the hay. We assured them that we were headed to the same destination tomorrow, and they could reconvene at that time.

Tahna looks quite content with her crossing.
Some of those passages and locks look kind of skinny for Holy Cow! It also seems there were swirling waters and heavy currents to navigate through all adding to the peaceful and serene beauty . I’d be interested to know once Brodie saw Tahna being carried across the bridge if he hitched a ride back to the other side. 🤣
Such a beautiful part of our country...
